Year 5 Blog 6.1.23

Date: 6th Jan 2023 @ 8:38pm

Welcome back to a new year and a new term. The children have had a busy week of learning and thoroughly deserve their weekend after the Christmas break.

In history we began our new topic all about the Vikings and looked at where they came from and using atlases to locate these counties. In groups, the children created a time line of important events during the Vikings stay in Great Britain.

In computing, we began our topic all about internet safety and looked at online safety and communication.

In maths, we have continued with our fraction unit and the children worked incredibly hard using their knowledge of equivalent fractions when adding fractions with differing denominators. All this so soon after Christmas!

In art, we began looking at what inspires fashion designers when creating a new range of clothes. We researched a number of designers and the children recorded what they had learnt about each one creatively in their sketchbooks. They then researched Viking clothing using the Chromebooks and sketched these in their books focussing on the style, patterns and colours used. The children will use this information to help them when they begin to design their own Viking inspired clothing.

In PE, we began our dodgeball sessions, which the children really enjoyed, and it was clearly evident that there was great progression from when they began this new sport back in Y4.

In RE, we began our new unit “If God is everywhere, why go to a place of worship?”

In groups, the children discussed the question, “What is a place of worship and what is it for?” Before exploring the differences within Anglican and Baptist churches. The children had fun drawing and labelling what would be found in each church onto an outline of a church.

Finally, the children were so excited to find out what the Y5 production was going to be….. The Pirates of the Curry Bean! Auditions for parts will be taking place over the next couple of weeks and we were super impressed with how many of our pupils put themselves forward for these. Lots of songs will also be making their way into your homes soon!

Have a safe and peaceful weekend,

From the Year 5 Team.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
