Year 5 Blog 29.9.23

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 4:57pm

This week, on Wednesday, we met with our buddies once more and walked to church together for the Harvest festival service, led brilliantly by our Y3 children. It was lovely seeing the children chatting together during the journey to and from church.

On Monday, we began our new English topic: The Highwayman and you could hear a pin drop as the teachers read the poem to the children. It looks like it’s going to be a fantastic journey of thoughts, ideas and rich vocabulary, and we are looking forward to writing our own versions of the poem.

On Thursday, one of our past pupils, Lottie, brought her horse, Mav, into school. Along with her Mum and Grandad, they shared lots of facts with us, before we met Mav and gave him a stroke. Once we had all shared some time with him, Lottie then rode him around the playground, which gave us the chance to use our senses to think of words to describe the sounds and movement we could hear and see. Back in class, we created a class vocabulary of senses that will be used during our Highwayman poetry writing activities.

In science, we investigated simple mechanisms (levers and pulleys) and discussed how they can help make tasks easier to carry out. We were amazed that by simply moving the position of the pivot (fulcrum) in a lever mechanism can greatly reduce the effort needed to lift the same load. We demonstrated this using Mr Coward’s wheeled box carrier, which soon became a child carrier!

In topic, we began our enquiry question to find out what other civilisations were doing during the time of the Mayas. In particular we looked at sports, the number system and hieroglyphics. It seems that the Maya’s were the first to invent a game involving a ball. However, we did find some evidence to suggest that a vase from 3000BC had pictures of four people, with one holding a ball. Is this enough evidence to say that the Egyptians had ball games before the Mayas???

What do you think? Also, do you know what the earliest ball sport in the UK was?

Enjoy your weekend and be safe.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
