Year 5 Blog 26.1.24

Date: 26th Jan 2024 @ 4:29pm

Welcome to this week's Y5 Blog.

We have been really busy continuing our build up writing for our Nowhere Emporiun topic and have covered 3 plot points: Memories, The chase and The bullying and taking refuge. The children continue to astound us with their rich use of adventerous vocabulary and should be applauded for the level of enthusiasm that they bring to each lesson.

In maths, the children have shown a great level of perserverence during our fraction unit of work. They have been adding fractions by ensuring the denominators are the same, and if the answer results in the numerator being higher than the denominator (an improper fraction), they have converted it into a mixed number. E.g:   3/4 + 7/8 = 6/8 + 7/8 = 13/8 = 1 5/8

In topic, the children have been busy researching lots of information about Viking life to help build up their evidence bank to decide whether the Vikings were vicious or victorious. The scales are balanced at the moment but could soon swing in favour of ??????

In art, and staying on a Viking theme, the children created the colours that they need for their Viking inspired clothing range and are now ready to cut out their designs before dressing their mannequin.

Dodgeball continues to be a firm PE favourite and this week the children focused on catching the ball. They now understand the importance of catching an opponents ball to ge them out and to free a team member.

In Science /PSHE, the children have been learning more about how their bodies will change as they approach puberty. We are so proud of how mature they were during these sessions and asked some really useful questions.

We didn't have any brass lessons this week but began our music unit - Blues Music. The children learnt the history of the Blues and where it originated from. They also listened to and responded to a variety of pieces through sketching, and will be composing their own pieces over the coming weeks.

We wish you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
