Year 5 Blog 2.12.22

Date: 2nd Dec 2022 @ 4:06pm

This week we have been continuing are Science topic on forces. The children have been busy carrying out not only one investigation but two!

The first one was investigating how the surface area of an object affected the air resistance acting upon it. They used their maths skills of measuring and calculating the surface areas of paper of differing sizes before dropping them from a height and recording how long each took to fall to the ground. The second investigation was a little messier and this involved water resistance. The children made aluminium foil boats with differing shaped fronts before blowing them across a tray of water and recording how long each took to reach the end. During each investigation, the children discussed variables and what makes a fair test. They understood the importance of keeping all the variables apart from one the same. We have a team of budding scientists in Y5 with incredibly enquiring minds!

In maths, we moved on to exploring timetables and graphs. The children were able to interpret the data into meaningful information to answer an array of questions. Maths homelearning for the next two weeks is related to continuous line graphs and has a festive theme as an added bonus. Please encourage your child to carry out this piece of homelearning along with the extension task.

In music, we introduced the history of Blues music and in our wider opps session with Mrs Hughes, the children began to learn to play some Blues music. We are looking forward to developing this further over the coming weeks.

In computing, we moved on with our Binary code the children learnt how the Mars Rover communicated with Mission Control and vice versa. The children thought of instructions that could be sent to the Mars Rover and then translated each character into binary code. It was tricky but fun!

Finally congratulations to our Year 5 cross country athletes who performed brilliantly at the Liverpool District championships last Saturday at Sefton Park. Their race followed the senior trials for a place in the GB team at the European championships taking place in a few weeks time. What a stage to run on!

Enjoy your weekend and stay safe.

From all of us in Year 5.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
