Year 5 Blog 20.1.23

Date: 20th Jan 2023 @ 10:08am

This week, we have been delving deeper into the Viking timeline and focussed primarily on the first raid on English soil – Lindisfarne monestary (Holy Island). Using primary evidence, from letters from Anglo Saxons and excerts from the Anxlo Saxon chronicles, as well as secondary evidence, from powerpoints and video clips, we could take ourselves back in time and imagine how it must have felt being a viking and a monk. Using this evidence, we then planned and wrote fabulous emotive first-person recounts as either a viking or a monk.

Staying in the time period of the Anglo Saxons, we have been exploring the story of Beowulf and next week will be using the theme of this story to plan our own.

In maths, we finished our topic on fractions and completed the end of chapter review. Next week we will be beginning our decimal topic.

In our music sessions with Mrs Hughes, we showed how well we have been progressing with reading music and playing the pieces we will perform to parents/carers at the end of this half term. A letter about this has been sent via Spider today.

In PE, we have improved with our passing/receiving skills along with our agility to avoid being tagged. We have become quite protective of our tag rugby tags!

In dodgeball, we focussed on chosing when it is best to catch a ball and when it is better to dodge it. We definitley need to be more attack minded next week to give us the best opportunity to win the game!

In PSHE, we have started to look at body changes during puberty and we are now more aware of what things happen to us during this time.

Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

All of us in Year 5.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
