Year 5 Blog - 19.4.23

Date: 19th Apr 2024 @ 11:29pm

It was lovely to welcome back the children to the start of the Summer term. They returned refreshed and full of enthusiasm, ready to learn lots of new and interesting things.

Our writing topic this half term is non-chronological report writing focussing on the Emperor Penguin. The children will then use everything they have learnt from these sentence stacking secessions to write their own report on the red squirrel.

In maths, we have begun our new topic: geometry. The children have learnt to use a protractor to measure angles and will be moving on to draw obtuse and acute angles.

In PE, we have begun our new dance unit: British Values. The children were excellent in choreographing movements for the five values and showed their creative flair. One child's idea was chosen for each value, which were then sequenced together to form a whole class motif and performed to the James Bond theme.

In athletics, the child were learning about running for distance and at a steady speed. They used stopwatches to time their partner to see if they could run the same distance twice in the same time.

The running theme continued on Wednesday when all Formby schools came together in support of the fight against knife crime. Our children ran 10 and 1/3 laps of the school track (1mile) most of it with their buddies, which was great fun. We then welcomed Woodlands' pupils who had run their leg of the relay and cheered our runners as they ran their leg to Range High.

Next week, we will be starting our local area study and find out about the history of Formby and why it has grown in size and population over time.

Our York residential is fast approaching and the children are becoming rather excited! There will be a parent/carer Zoom meeting next week as long as more 'Yorkie Talks' with the children so everyone is ready for a fabulous trip away.

Happy weekend everyone. Relax and stay safe.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
