Year 5 13/01/23

Date: 13th Jan 2023 @ 2:21pm

This week we have continued learning all about the conflict between the Vikings and Anglo Saxons in history. We looked in particular at King Alfred the Great, how his actions changed the English landscape and brought a period of peace to the country. We thought about what qualities are needed to be a “great” king then researched Alfred to decide whether or not he deserved this epithet (title). We then, in english, wrote a historically accurate piece answering the question - Was King Alfred great? with evidence and inference to back up our thinking. As a year group we unanimously decided that he was indeed a great King.

In maths, we have continued our work on fractions. We can now answer problems and calculations that need us to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, converting answers between improper fractions and mixed numbers and simplifying the answer e.g. 4/5 + 8/10 = 8/10 + 8/10 = 16/10 = 1 6/10 = 1 3/5.

In PE we have had some great games of tag rugby and dodge ball, refining our passing and dodging skills.

We have also started to practise some pieces in music on our brass instruments in the hope that we can perform to parents in the afternoon of the last Tuesday this half term. More details to follow.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
