Well how did that happen? Another half term in Year Three has passed by in the blink of an eye. The children have really enjoyed this topic and this week being Children’s Mental Health week and Safer Internet Day we have spent plenty of time discussing ways to keep ourselves safe, happy, healthy and positive.  What a pleasure it is to be able to spread a little joy and positivity with a hug, smiling face, encouraging word or a pledge to help out at home a little more. Don’t worry, we have the children’s goals written down as evidence for anyone who can’t quite believe that they have promised to be kinder to their brother, more patient with their sister or to give Mum / Dad a break sometimes as they work so hard. On Tuesday we took the time to investigate the age restrictions on popular social media platforms. The children’s knowledge and experience of social media varied but they were all shocked to find out that Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and YouTube all have the age restriction of 13+ years. This led to some interesting discussions about how the children have sometimes stumbled across content that is certainly not suitable for a Primary aged child. Food for thought isn’t it…

Talking about food we had some fun in class this week using the NHS Food Scanner app to delve into the sugar, salt and fat content of some of our favourite snacks. A can of coke contains 10 sugar cubes, a pack of Oreos, almost 15 sugar cubes and a McDonalds milkshake, well let’s just say it’s above 20 sugar cubes! The app is great as it allows the children to scan the barcode on a packet then it suggests healthy alternatives / swaps. Some of the swaps were just as delicious but the children understood that they were a far healthier choices for a growing body and brain.

To finish off our Healthy Humans topic, the children will be designing their own healthy sandwich when we return from half term. Maybe they could help with the weekly shop, peruse the shelves for yummy, nutritious fillings or try a few different types of bread to help them with their design process? Look out for a Spider message from us with more details.

Have a wonderful half term everyone. We look forward to seeing the children on Monday 21st February, bright eyed and bushy tailed.

The Year Three Team x

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
