Year 2 Weekly Blog 26.1.24

Date: 26th Jan 2024 @ 3:33pm

What a lovely week we have had in Year 2, this term is really flying!

We have introduced the children to fractions this week, looking at halves, quarters and thirds. The children are able to identify if a shape is made up of halves, quarters or thirds and they are relating the name of each part of a whole to the denominator and relating the number of shaded parts to the numerator. We have set some fractions homework on doodle to help progress with this. Please see the home learning tab for more information.

Our grammar focus this week has been contractions and the children have been working hard to identify different contractions as well as use them in their writing. During English we have continued our scaffolded write of 'Little Red Reading Hood' focusing on speech marks when using dialogue and also introducing onamatopheias.

In Art this week, the children have continued sketching, which they absolutely love! You have never heard a room so quiet before, the concentration levels were high! We gave the children a number of small detailed objects (such as shells, pencil sharpeners, lego, barbie accessories) for them to sketch, paying extra attention to the textures they were forming.

During RE, we were looking at different stories of the Prophet Muhammed and how he uses his stories to inspire people. We looked at two stories in particular, where he emphasises how important it is to care for all God's creatures, even ants. We spoke about how these stories might inspire others and dicussed who inspires them.

The children had a great computer session this week, continuing our term on algorithmns. Using beebots, the children set up algorthimns for their friends to predict where their beebot would land, using a map. They also had a go on the beebot app on the ipads, trying to navigate their way around the maps.

In Music this week we were listening to orchestral music, with a focus on 'Do you want to build a snowman' from the movie Frozen. The children had a storyboard of the song, and we paused it at several points, allowing the children time to listen to what instruments they thought were being played. We discussed the different instruments you would find in an orchestra and how we usually get to visit the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic in Year 2!

We are starting our DT project next week, please can everyone remember to bring in recycled materials for us to use for our junk making! Thank you!

Have a lovely weekend,

Take care,

The Year 2 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
