Year 2 Weekly Blog (2. 10. 2020)

Date: 1st Oct 2020 @ 12:50pm

The cooler weather definitely seems to arrived now, and the children have been busy throughout the week thinking about how the seasons are changing from summer to autumn; both classes have been asking lots of excellent scientific questions and making some interesting observations about how the world around us is changing as we move the new season.  On Thursday afternoon in Science, Mrs Groom brought in lots of different types of leaves from her garden - some that had fallen, some that she pruned! - for the children to examine and explore, thinking about the differences, learning their different names, and classifying trees as either evergreen or deciduous.  The children also thought carefully about the significance of trees within our world, how important they are, and what their role is in supporting biodiversity and the health of the planet.

Continuing this theme of autumn, the children created some lovely drawings of their favourite things about autumn using lots of autumnal colours: conkers (lots of conkers!), pumpkins, and very pretty trees with lots of different autumnal coloured leaves.  The children also displayed their artistic skills this week creating some origami houses!  And also in R.E., where the children thought about the differences between the Old Testament and New, and how the Bible itself can be thought of as a 'library of smaller books'; the children talked about the different names of these books, and drew small pictures to represent the Biblical story within - during R.E., 2G listened carefully to the story of Daniel and made their own decisions how best to represent the 'Book of Daniel' with their artistic skills; some drew pictures of lions or a lions den, others decided on drawing Daniel's saviour, the angel!

In Maths, the children have continued to consolidate their understanding of the column method: this week shifting their focus to thinking about how to use the method for subtraction, whilst also continuing to practise their use of this technique for addition.  All of the children are making great progress with this tricky ‘Year 2 method’ and seem to be getting better and more confident every day.

The children have continued to impress with their enthusiasm in P.E., developing their athletics skills, running, weaving, and using tennis balls on Wednesday afternoon to practise their throwing and catching skills.

Have a great weekend, Year 2!

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
