Year 2 Weekly Blog (14. 5. 21)

Date: 11th May 2021 @ 10:34am

We have had another great week in Year 2.

This week, the children have continued to learn about money, with a particular focus on change, and how to calculate it after buying something.  The children have had lots of practical experience, using pretend money and playing interactive games, but to consolidate this learning, real-world experience of handling money and buying things in shops is crucial!  Mr Edger even opened an outdoor shop where the children had a go at pretending to buy different items for different prices; the children were given a pot of money and had to work out the exact amount of change needed for the item they wished to 'purchase'.  All of the children really enjoyed the practical experience of 'visiting the shop'!

On Monday, the children continued to think about the Great Fire of London, imagining that they were there in 1666.  What could they smell?  What could they hear?  What could they feel?  What could they see?  We were all amazed with the wonderful array of adjectives the children used to describe what it might have been like to have been alive during that traumatic moment.  As well as this, the children had a music lesson and learned all about rap music and began to learn a song all about the Great Fire, penned by MC Murdock some years ago!

On Thursday, we had our first trip out of school for a long time with a trip to see the school church.  As part of the RE curriculum in Year 2, the children learn about ‘special places’, and in the past have visited other places of worship and learned about other religions.  This year, with St Luke's church so close, it was more practical to arrange a visit up the road to see the church and meet our new Vicar, Matt.  It has been a long time since we have been able to visit the church, and everyone had a lovely time.  Matt was able to meet the children face-to-face and speak with them for the first time since joining the church in September, and he showed the children all around the church, one class group at a time, whilst the other class enjoyed the fresh air outside and did some sketching in the church grounds.  We all had a lovely morning out of school, and hopefully we will be able to visit church again before the school year finishes for the Year 6 leavers' service.

On Friday, everyone in school took part in lots of activities organised by Everton Football Club.  There were lots of different virtual lessons for the classes across the school to 'attend'.  In Year 2, we did some dancing in the morning, and then had an opportunity in the afternoon to use the playtime activity box outside.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend, and look forward to seeing you all again on Monday!

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
