Year 2 Weekly Blog (11. 9. 20)

Date: 11th Sep 2020 @ 9:44am

Following last week's focus on the wider world and our place within our community, the children have continued to think about the environment and the different things we can all do to help protect it: recycling, feeding the birds, and always using both sides of a piece of paper!  They have also thought carefully about the different animals that are endangered and created some very effective 'save the panda' posters!

On Monday, the children had a reflective afternoon, thinking about different ways to keep themselves calm.  The children talked about their 5 different senses and used them to complete a mindfulness activity: thinking about what could be heard during a moment of silence (footsteps, birds tweeting, children outside, teachers in other classrooms!); what could be seen in the classroom; what could be felt; and any particular things the children could remember tasting or smelling from earlier in the day.  The children also practised some breathing exercises and really enjoyed having a calm, reflective and quiet end to the day.

In Maths, the children have been exploring how they can compare numbers using the greater than '>' or less than '<' symbols; they have also been using Diennes equipment to think about place value, and the value of different two digit numbers.  The children have also continued to revise and practise their addition and subtraction skills.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the year group had their first P.E. sessions - luckily for the children, the weather was warm and dry and perfect for outdoor exercising!  The children practised some running skills and enjoyed a variety of different running games.

Finally, towards the end of this week, children across the year group have enjoying helping Mrs Groom tidy up the school garden; small groups have enjoyed the sunny weather during the afternoons, going out to the garden and investigating what has been growing over the summer months and weeding the raised beds, getting them ready for them to be used again soon.  The children had a close look at the variety of different herbs that have been growing: mint, lemon balm, rosemary and lots of others!  Hopefully the good weather will continue next week and more groups will be able to go out and continue tidying the garden.

See you next week!

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
