This week we have started learning all about and consolidating previous learning  on forces - in particular gravity and air resistance. We have carried out a number of experiments, thinking carefully about the variables and fair testing. We went outside with the parachute to feel air resistance, ran with different types and sizes of paper, e.g. large 1m x 1m thick card, A2 sugar paper, A2 thin card, A4 photocopy paper, to see the difference in ease of running when the air reistance increased. In class we dropped differet objects to see them land at the same time, showing that the force of gravity is equal on the objects. We then conducted an experiment to test air resistance on different sizes of paper, showing that even though the force of gravity is equal, air resistance can play a part in the slowing down of the object as it falls. Please see the attached photos.

In maths we have been dividing 4 digit by 1 digit numbers and this week's homework consolidates this.

In English we have written the mst amazing poems, thinking carefully about the vocabulary and stylistic devices. We have taken some of the children's favourite lines to create a poem for you here:

The sun is a glittering fire, never going out,

Eradicating everything that dares challenge its glowing beauty.

Mercury is the planet of gems, jewels and constellations on its surface,

With greedy robbers mining for the core of diamonds.

Venus is an explosion of all the rainbow colours,

Splattered over the cataclysmic canvas.

Earth is a blue and green drowned planet

Lurking in a black hole.

Mars is a giant boulder,

Thrown into orbit by the strongest man.

Jupiter is an astonishing gold and silver swirl,

with phantoms creeping around the vanilla and chocolate debonair abyss.

Saturn is a colossal ball of stars, intoxicating people with its beauty,

And using them as sinister galactic slaves.

Uranus is a sideways daemon with a ring as bright as a nebula,

Spreading its lights like butter, Ripping through the vast multiverse.

Neptune is a dark, velvet eclipse,

Fuelling the drowned solar system.

Finally, we would like to wish Caden (5H) , Ben and Olivia (5W) the very best of luck as they represent Sefton in a national cross country race at Sefton Park in Liverpool. St Luke's have 8 runners representing Sefton across Y5&6.  Also, a huge well done to all those children in our school choir who sang so beautifully at the switching on of Formby lights.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
