Reception Weekly Blog (6.10.23)

Date: 6th Oct 2023 @ 5:29pm

5 weeks of primary school already and look how much we have achieved!

We have been inspired by Autumn over the last few weeks in Reception. We have collected lots of Autumn treasures and began our first observational drawings in our artwork. We enjoyed getting creative by replacing paint brushes with our hands to make large scale paintings. We left the paintings to dry then talked about the different shapes of leaves, conkers and seasonal vegetables before using pencil to draw on top of the paintings. Finally, we used our fingers to smudge and mix coloured chalk into our work. It was rather magical to see the pencil drawings pop against a background of Autumnal colours. We are all artists in Reception!

In our outdoor learning area, we are becoming more confident in mastering the adventure trim trail. This helps us develop our core strength and balance. The children love learning outdoors, so please continue to offer lots of opportunities to develop independent skills at home e.g. putting on jumpers/cardigans and coats.

We are also strengthening our fine motor skills every day in Reception, focusing on the smaller movements of our fingers, hands and wrists. We regularly use these skills to zip up our own coats, prepare our snack, eat our lunch, use scissors, paint, mark make/write to name just a few. Here are some fun ideas to help you practise fine motor skills at home:

  • Make playdough together, twist, roll, squeeze and pinch
  • Mark making in shaving foam or sand
  • Thread beads onto pipe cleaners
  • Cut out shapes using cardboard and pinch pegs onto it.

Our learning next week will be based on the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper. We will sort and group vegetables, make and enjoy soup and even plant some of our own before the weather gets too cold.

We can’t wait to hear all about your child’s good news on Monday. Maybe you have found or made one of our new sounds? If you have any pictures you would like to share with us please send them to reception@slf.sefton.school

Have a great weekend everyone,

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
