Reception Weekly Blog (19.5.23)

Date: 19th May 2023 @ 3:41pm

A wonderfully busy week!

On Monday, the children were intrigued when they arrived into the classroom to find the caterpillars had all more than doubled in size! We couldn’t wait to record our observations in our caterpillar diaries, each child drew a detailed picture of the caterpillars, and wrote a sentence to describe what they could see. It was fantastic to see so many children give independent writing a go, pinching the sounds they needed for words on their ‘Fred Fingers’.

On Tuesday, we had an ‘arty’ afternoon taking our spiral drawing skills large scale! Each child has been busily designing their very own spiral pattern, experimenting with different colours of chalk and oil pastels, and learning how to blend colours together. Well done Reception!

In maths this week, we have been perfecting our number bonds to 10 knowledge. By the end of Reception, it is expected that children automatically recall the number bonds to five:

0 + 5 = 5

1 + 4 = 5

2 + 3 = 5

3 + 2 = 5

4 + 1 = 5

5 + 0 = 5

To help your child understand that numbers can be made by combining smaller numbers, you could play a game of ‘Bunny Ears’ at home. Using 2 hands to be the ears, how many ways can your child show 5?

As our topic of growing draws to an end the children will have brought home their very own pea plant they been lovingly caring for over the last few weeks. Once the pea shoot has established, you could plant it into a yogurt pot of compost, and place it on a sunny window ledge at home. If the seed has not yet sprouted, you could try leaving the seed to dry in a warm place, before placing it inside the bag, in a new damp ball of cotton wool. We would love to see the children’s pea plant progress once it has settled into your home.

Have a lovely, sunny weekend, we look forward to hearing all about it from the children, on Monday.

Take care,

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
