Reception Weekly Blog 13.5.22

Date: 13th May 2022 @ 2:23pm

What a fantastic start to a very ‘Royal’ few weeks in Reception!

We were introduced to the story of ‘The Princess and The Pea’ on Monday, the children learnt that the princess had to sleep on top of 20 mattresses with one pea under them all to prove she was a real princess! It was a great place to start learning all about the number 20, the children have enjoyed seeing two 10’s making 20.

On Tuesday the children helped create their very own role play castle, by colour mixing black and white paint to make grey, each child had a turn of dipping a brick into the paint and printing on the role play screen.

After reading the story of ‘The Runaway Pea’, we decided that dried peas should not be thrown into the bin but given the opportunity to grow! So, the children designed their very own ‘mini greenhouses’ to hang in the classroom which are now home to one small, dried pea! After dipping the cotton wool in water and wrapping the pea up inside we are hoping we can all grow a pea plant, the children are eagerly waiting to see any sign of them growing.

Later on in the week, we read alternative versions of ‘The Princess and The Pea’ including a version from in Africa, the children learnt how to say “hello” in Swahili “jambo, habari”, Somali “iska waran” and in Amharic “selam”. We can’t wait to learn more about Africa after half term. Another version was ‘The Pea and The Princess’ by Mini Grey, which told the story from the Pea’s perspective, teaching us a valuable lesson that there are two sides to every story.

We will continue learning about different types of castles next week. If you have any pictures of times you have visited a castle, make sure to send them in to reception@slf.sefton.school or on a good news slip.

Have a relaxing weekend,

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
