Year 5 Class Blog 12.6.26
Date: 12th Jun 2026 @ 5:07pm
Welcome to our end of week blog for week 2 of the last half term of the year.
The highlight this week was when we congregated into the hall to create our lifeboat sketches that once completed will be displayed across Formby to celebrate 250 years since Formby lifeboat station was opened.
In maths, we moved away from the traditional maths topics and focussed on translating shapes and using coordinates. Remember, it’s along the corridor and up the stairs, or as Mr Williams says, “Along the wall and climb the ladder.”
In English, we began our emotional topic called “The Piano”. Who would have thought that you could gain so much from a 2 ½ minute animated film with its accompanied music. The classes were a hive of discussion and the pieces of writing we produced were so powerful.
In science, we have begun our topic on the reproduction of plants and used the orienteering course to find out the functions of parts of a flower. Next week, we will be dissecting flowers to actually see which parts are used in the pollination and fertilisation process.
In computing, we began our coding unit of work and got to know the Crumble micro controller that we will be coding in future lessons. We managed to make our ‘sparkle’ light up with different intervals, speeds and colours. We are going to use buzzers, switches and motors to add to our circuits, which sounds exciting!
In guided reading, we have been learning about the red squirrel as part of our local history and science topics. Hopefully we might spot one next week when we go on our walk to the church grounds and Pinewoods.
Our dance routine based on British Values is taking shape and we are now confident in performing the whole class motif to the James Bond Theme.
In Latin, we continued our work on prepositions which has helped us with our English prefixes.
In outdoor games, our cricketing skills are improving and we are confident in accurately holding the bat and hitting a straight drive off a tee. We also learnt some fielding skills, especially when supporting the wicket keeper.
Library time was fun this week and some of our classmates shared the book they were currently reading or had previously read to inspire us to want to read it. We like to have recommendations from other children in the class.
In PSHE, we discussed community pressure groups and how they can help others. We focussed on Keep Britain Tidy and created our own campaigns to persuade others to want to reduce litter pollution.
We finished the week off by transferring our video clips to IMovie; some of us have managed to begin cutting scenes that are not needed and adding transitions linking sections of their film. We can’t wait to keep working on this, with the big reveal being during the last week of the year.
The weather has been totally unpredictable this week, so let’s hope the sun will shine and we can get out and about more this weekend.
Finally I wonder how many more red cards will be handed out between now and Monday? I’m guessing another 4…
Happy weekend everybody.
