Early Reading

"Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible."

"Reading is important.  If you know how to read, then the whole world opens up to you."

[Barack Obama]

We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.

At St Luke's, reading is prioritised to allow pupils to access the full curriculum offer.

We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme from the very start of Reception to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success as they move to KS2.

The Ruth Miskin Training badge awarded to St Luke's recognise us for teaching the programme with fidelity and passion – we know what it takes to make reading and writing pleasurable and rewarding for our children.

This badge recognises that all staff at St Luke's:

  • Raise standards in reading and writing for our children
  • Are all expertly trained by Ruth Miskin Training – including our headteacher, Mrs Cowey
  • Gain the latest programme updates through regular visits from our Ruth Miskin Consultant Trainer
  • Support our most vulnerable readers with extra one-to-one teaching every day.

All our teachers and teaching assistants are trained to the same high level, enabling the programme to be taught in small groups.

On-going daily assessment and a summative assessment every 6-7 weeks ensures that children are taught alongside others with a similar phonics knowledge.  The books used in lessons and also those taken home by children are closely matched to their phonics understanding, ensuring that children feel successful and develop their reading accuracy and fluency.

Where children are in danger of falling behind, or where they find reading a struggle, we intervene early with the support of families to ensure they catch up and keep up.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
