Year 5 Blog 4.9.26

What a brilliant start to a new year it has been. The children have been fantastic and have settled into Year 5 so quickly and easily. We are looking forward to the journey ahead of us with such anticipation.

This week we have created our class charter of rules that we will all try our best to uphold.

They also had the opportunity to share their holiday news with their peers.

We introduced our new topic based on the Maya Civilisation and located where in the world they lived. The children also used Atlases to locate the 7 continents and 5 oceans. As always, this led to lots of discussion about other places in the world, including the Panama and Suez Canals and why they were constructed!

PE begins next week – Wednesday for indoor dodgeball and Friday for outdoor tag rugby. Kits need to be worn on these dates.

Home learning will begin next Friday and more details will be sent then.

Brass lessons will recommence on Tuesday afternoons, so all instruments will need to be in school every Tuesday until February half term.

In maths, the children have studied Roman numerals and have completed their first arithmetic quiz. These quizzes will take place every Friday.

In spellings, the focus this week has been on the silent letter b in words: plumber, subtle, doubt, tomb, comb etc. We did discuss why tomb and comb don’t rhyme!
