Year 5 Blog 2nd October

Another brilliant week has gone by, and it has been wonderful to see the children bringing such fantastic energy and focus to their learning. This week in Maths, we shifted our focus to addition and subtraction, with the children exploring various mental strategies to solve problems quickly and efficiently. Over in English, creativity has taken a sweet turn as they prepare to write their own poems about The Cutest Animal in the World. They have been busy planning their ideas and playing with rhyming, and they are fully ready to write their final masterpieces next week.
Our historical journey into the Maya civilization has deepened as we looked closer at how they lived in independent city-states, each ruled by their own powerful king rather than a single leader. We are all incredibly excited for our immersive Maya Day on Monday, where the children will spend the day fully experiencing ancient Maya life. In other areas of the curriculum, we explored the concept of forgiveness in RE, sharing mature discussions about why it can sometimes be so hard to do. In PSHE, we focused on our well-being by looking at exactly why exercise is so important to our bodies and minds.
Out on the pitch and in the hall, the children have been sharpening their skills and learning clever tactics to beat their opponents in both Tag Rugby and Dodgeball. Things are also continuing to sound spectacular in our brass music lessons as the classes work hard to read music and understand the notations.
In our weekly competitions, a huge congratulations goes to 5H for claiming the Doodle crown once again! A massive well done also goes to the top five Doodlers in each class whose hard work is really paying off. Keep your eyes peeled because a brand new TT Rockstars competition will be starting very soon, so make sure to log on and get some practice in over the weekend.
Looking ahead to next week, we will be celebrating our Harvest Festival at the church on Tuesday morning. Parents are very welcome to join us, with 5H attending at 9:30am and 5W at 10:00am. We are kindly asking for Harvest donations of non-perishable food items, such as tins, packets, and dried goods, which can be brought into school ahead of the service.
Please remember that new homework has been sent home today and needs to be completed and returned by Wednesday. We are also still collecting examples of interesting typography from food packaging, magazines, or newspapers for our Art focus. Finally, please ensure PE kits are worn to school as usual every Wednesday and Friday. Thank you for your continued support, have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone ready for Maya Day on Monday!
