Year 5 Blog 25th September

Date: 25th Sep 2026 @ 3:59pm

Another week has flown by, and it has been absolutely brilliant to see the children fully immersed in their learning! They are showing  dedication and focus, bringing a wonderful energy to the classroom as we tackle new challenges across the curriculum.
In Maths, we took our place value work to the next level. The children have been working incredibly hard on comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers all the way up to 1 million! They have been mastering how to round these large numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000. It has been wonderful to see them tackle these big mathematical challenges with such confidence.
Over in English, creativity has continued to flow! The children have been building on their brilliant ideas for their poem, The Most Annoying Animal in the World. They have been refining their verses, playing with rhyme and alliteration, and putting the finishing touches on their drafts. We cannot wait to see them write up their final poems next week!
Our historical journey into the Maya civilization took a fascinating turn in our Topic work. We explored the "Lords of the Jungle" and learned all about the K'uhul Ajaw—the holy lords or kings who ruled the ancient Maya city-states. The children were captivated to learn how these leaders were viewed not just as kings, but as sacred connections between the people and the gods, holding immense religious and political power.
Out on the pitch and in the hall, the energy has been electric during PE. In Dodgeball, the children have been strategising and learning sneaky tactics on how to catch opponents out. Meanwhile, in Tag Rugby, they have been sharpening a whole host of skills including dodging, throwing, and catching. Their teamwork and sportsmanship continue to shine.
Things have also been sounding spectacular in our music lessons! The children have been blowing us away in brass, where they have started learning a fantastic Queen-inspired piece of music. It will be wonderful to hear this piece when it all comes together.

The Great Doodle Competition!
The scoreboard was incredibly close this week! A massive well done to 5H, who were crowned our weekly class champions, winning by a tiny margin of just 2 stars! The competition is heating up, so please keep encouraging your children to log on. A huge thank you and well done to everyone who completed both pieces of home learning this week—we are so proud of your dedication. Well done to the Doodlers of the week; their names are on the board for the classes to see.

A few quick reminders for the week ahead:
  • Typography Inspiration: We are continuing our Art focus on typography next week. Please encourage your child to bring in examples of typography they find around them! This could be interesting lettering from food packaging, magazines, newspapers, or even photos taken while out and about.
  • PE Kits: Please ensure PE kits are worn to school every Wednesday and Friday.
  • Home Learning: New homework has been sent out today. If your child didn't complete the English from last week then please encourage your child to log  on.  Please ensure both pieces are completed and returned by Wednesday.
  • Reading: Please continue to encourage your child to read daily and update their reading records.
A huge thank you to all the parents who came to our 'Meet the Teacher' sessions this week! It was lovely to see so many of you there. For anyone who couldn't make it, the information booklets are available for you to collect so you don't miss out.
Thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
