Year 5 Weekly Blog – Happy Half Term!

What a busy and brilliant eight weeks it has been in Year 5! We have packed so much into our learning, and the children have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm, effort and fantastic attitudes.

On Monday, we walked to church with our Year 1 buddies to celebrate St Luke’s Day. Rev Matt led his usual brilliant worship, and it was lovely to share this special occasion with our buddies.

In Art, the children put their typography skills to the test as they created their final pieces. We have been so impressed with the creativity and care they have shown throughout this project. In our final Maya civilisation lesson, we explored the Great Abandonment and the decline of some of the great Maya cities. The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their own theories and debating the possible reasons behind this fascinating historical mystery!

Our brass lessons continue to improve week on week, with both the children and teachers putting in a tremendous amount of effort. It is fantastic to see everyone developing their skills and growing in confidence with their instruments.

In PE, we completed our final dodgeball session of the unit with a Year 5 round-robin league tournament. We managed to play six rounds before running out of time, so we hope to complete the final round after half term. The children loved competing against one another, but what really stood out was the first-class respect they showed towards their opponents. They should be very proud of the sportsmanship they demonstrated!

In Maths, we completed our unit on addition and subtraction, while in English, we continued our build-up to writing inspired by the short film The Present. The vocabulary the children are using is phenomenal, and we are excited to see how they use their fantastic ideas and carefully chosen words in their final pieces.

After a long and action-packed eight weeks since beginning our Year 5 journey, the children have certainly earned a well-deserved half-term break. We hope they enjoy the opportunity to relax, unwind and recharge their batteries ready for what promises to be the most exciting term of the year!

Happy holidays, everyone! Stay safe, enjoy the break, and we look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for another fantastic half term! 🌟

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
