Year 5 Blog 18/9/26

Date: 18th Sep 2026 @ 5:24pm

What another wonderful week it has been in Year 5!

The children have truly settled into the swing of the new term now, and it has been fantastic to see their hard work and enthusiasm continue to grow as we dive deeper into our curriculum.

In Maths, we have continued our work on place value with numbers all the way up to 1 million. This week, the children have been masterfully partitioning these large numbers and challenging themselves by accurately placing them on number lines. Next week, we will be taking this a step further as we begin comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers.

Over in English, creativity has been flowing! The children began building a poem titled The Most Annoying Animal in the World. The children have had a brilliant time brainstorming exciting adjectives and powerful verbs, whilst experimenting with rhyme and alliteration to make their verses pop.

Our historical journey continued in our Topic work, where we spent time discovering the incredible engineering and design behind how the Maya built their extensive civilisations. The children were fascinated to see how these ancient cities came together.

In Art, we turned our focus to a fantastic graphic designer and typographer named Louise Fili. The children thoroughly enjoyed researching her iconic, elegant style and learning how she uses beautiful lettering in modern design, which has given them plenty of inspiration for their own work!

Out on the pitch and in the hall, we have continued developing our Tag Rugby and Dodgeball skills during PE. The children are showing great teamwork and sportsmanship. It is also wonderful to see our wider school community buzzing, as both music lessons and after-school clubs are now officially up and running!

The Great Doodle Competition!
We are launching an exciting new Doodle championship in Year 5! Every week in class, we will be celebrating our top three individual doodlers. We will also be keeping a close eye on the scoreboard to see who will be crowned the weekly class champions—will it be 5W or 5H? Even better, there is a Doodle competition running where you can win a massive bundle of games, so please check out your child's Doodle page to find out more details on how to enter! If you need a reminder of your child’s password, please let us know.

A few quick reminders for the week ahead:

  • Well done to everyone who remembered to bring their brass instruments this week! Please remember they need to be in school every Tuesday afternoon.
  • PE kits should be worn to school every Wednesday and Friday.
  • Home learning has been sent out today (a copy is on the Y5 area of the website) and is due back by Wednesday. Maths is on paper and English has been set via Doodle.
  • Please keep encouraging your child to read daily and update their reading records.
  • School Council speeches will take place early next week, so if your child would like to run for class councillor, then this is the perfect chance for them to write up thir persuasive speech.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
