Year 5 Blog 16.10.26

Date: 16th Oct 2026 @ 2:30pm

What a fantastic, action-packed week we have had in Year 5! The children have worked incredibly hard, showcasing both their creativity and determination across all subjects.
In maths this week, we have been mastering addition and subtraction. However, calculating the answer is only half the job, so the children have also been learning how to prove their work is correct using two brilliant checking strategies. They practiced rounding to estimate their answers first to ensure they were sensible, and they utilised inverse calculations to work backward and see if their operations matched up perfectly.
Our writing this week was inspired by the beautiful short animation 'The Present' by Jacob Frey. We started the week by reflecting on our own wellbeing, investigating the different ways that screen time and physical activity make us feel. The children are now channeling those personal insights into creating powerful, emotive narratives to accompany the video, and their descriptive language has been truly wonderful to read.
We also took a step back in time to explore the fascinating world of the ancient Maya civilisation. The children became history detectives as they discovered how the Maya people wrote using a complex system of logograms, which are symbols representing whole words, and phonetic symbols that represent sounds. They absolutely loved trying their hand at writing like ancient scribes.
We were very lucky to take part in a problem-solving session run by a visiting teacher from Birkdale High School. The children were challenged to think critically and apply their logic to a tricky puzzle.. It was wonderful to see them collaborate so well, using their mathematical brains to break down the problems and find the solution.
Thursday was a massive highlight for Year 5 as the children danced and had a brilliant time at the school disco. On top of all the fun on the dancefloor, we were absolutely blown away by the incredible talent on display from the pupils who were selected as semi-finalists for Art Stars. We definitely have some exceptionally gifted artists in our midst!
To finish our wonderful week, we spent some lovely quality time with our Year 1 buddies. The Year 5 children showed amazing leadership, care, and kindness while supporting their younger buddies with activities in the classroom and sharing lots of laughs while playing games together outside.
Next week is our final week of the term, and a quick reminder that the children will finish on Thursday 22nd October at the usual time of 3.20pm. We have an incredibly busy few days ahead to wrap up our learning, so let’s make sure we keep up the fantastic attendance we have enjoyed all term and finish the half-term on a high.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
