What a fantastic second week it has been in Year 5!
After a brilliant start last week, it was straight down to business this week. We have truly built on our new routines, and the children have stepped their learning up a gear with fantastic focus and enthusiasm across all of their subjects.
In our topic work, we dived deeper into the Maya Civilisation by exploring how they began to farm and investigating the unique geographical obstacles they faced.
Meanwhile, in maths, we moved on from Roman numerals into place value, working with numbers all the way up to 1 million! The children practiced reading and writing these large numbers in both numerals and words, and they also tackled their second weekly Friday arithmetic quiz with great confidence.
Over in English, we have been working hard on warming up our basic skills to lay a strong foundation for all the amazing writing the children will be doing throughout the year.
We also launched an exciting new art topic on typography. The children sketched different styles of font and had a real lightbulb moment when they realised just how many diverse letters surround us every day. Some children expressed a keen interest in sketching letters they spot out and about, so if your child would like to bring in their own sketches, please send them in next Friday to use in our next lesson.
In RE, we explored the theme of lessons learnt from Jesus by looking closely at and discussing various quotes from the Bible.
We also enjoyed two brilliant, high-energy PE sessions this week. Indoor dodgeball on Wednesday was incredibly fun and engaging, allowing the children to build beautifully on the skills they learned last year, while Friday's tag rugby session was packed with active outdoor fun. Please remember that PE kits should continue to be worn to school every Wednesday and Friday.
As a final reminder for the week ahead, brass instruments must be in school every Tuesday afternoon from now until the February half term.
Home learning has been sent out today. A copy can be found in the homelearning section of the Y5 area of the website. This needs to be returned by Wednesday. We visited the library yesterday afernoon, but their is a technical issue with the computer system so unfortunately the children were unable to book any books out. They still enjoyed their time browsing the books on offer and having some quality reading time. Please remind your child to read daily and fill in their reading records, especially when they have finished a book. Some reading records may be gathering dust somewhere in the house. If your child didn't bring one home today, please have a look and send them in on Monday.
