Year 3 Weekly Blog 6.6.25

Date: 6th Jun 2025 @ 4:25pm

Welcome back to our final term of Year 3 – it’s hard to believe how fast this year is going! The children returned on Wednesday, and although it was a bit of a shock to the system after the break, they quickly settled back into the routine. In just three short days, they’ve achieved so much already!

This week in Maths, we’ve been exploring perpendicular and parallel lines. We know that perpendicular lines meet or cross at a right angle, and parallel lines never meet - no matter how far they stretch in either direction! The children loved the challenge of spotting different types of lines around the school and worked really hard to understand the difference between the two.

In English, we’ve been working on adding -ation to the end of verbs to form nouns. The children learned that if a verb ends in a consonant, we simply add -ation (e.g. inform → information), but if the verb ends in e, we must drop the e before adding the suffix (e.g. prepare → preparation). Some of our example words included: information, temptation, accusation, reservation, preparation, and exploration.

Building on the excitement of last term’s Roman history topic, we explored a new key text, Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. The children were fascinated to learn about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. They asked such thoughtful questions and were amazed by this significant historical event.

We also introduced our new Science topic, Light and Dark! We discussed how we need light in order to see things and began to explore light sources and non-light sources.

This term’s indoor PE will see the children developing their orienteering skills. On Friday they worked brilliantly in pairs to 'set' their maps and followed routes around cones with impressive teamwork and direction skills.

Next week, we’re very excited to begin our new Geography topic, UK Today. We’ll be using maps, atlases, globes, and digital mapping tools to explore countries and key features. The children will also develop their map skills, including using compass points, four-figure grid references, and understanding symbols and keys. We’ll also be naming and locating the countries and major cities of the UK.

In English, we’ll begin reading another new key text: Wisp: A Story of Hope by Zana Fraillon and Grahame Baker-Smith. It tells the powerful story of Idris, a child refugee who has no memories of his life before the refugee camp. The children will be using this moving and inspiring story to write their own independent stories. Given the amazing work the children have already written this year, we're really looking forward to seeing what they come up with for this piece.

We are all really looking forward to another fantastic term, thank you for your continued support.

The Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
