Year 3 Weekly Blog 25.4.25
Date: 25th Apr 2025 @ 5:10pm
Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely break. We’ve had a fantastic start to the summer term in Year 3, diving straight into our exciting new topic – The Roman Empire!
This week, we introduced the children to Latin, the language spoken by the Romans. We explored how Latin has influenced many of the words we use in English today. The children were thrilled to receive their very own Latin names, which they’ll be using during our Latin lessons – we’ll be learning more about what their names mean as the term goes on!
In English, we’ve been reading the myth of Romulus and Remus – twin brothers raised by wolves who are said to have founded Rome. The children did a great job of reading the story and answering questions to show their understanding. It’s been a fun way to start thinking about Roman life and how the Romans influenced Britain.
We also celebrated Earth Day on Tuesday by reading A Planet Full of Plastic by Neal Layton. The book, along with Greta Thunberg’s inspiring quote “No one is too small to make a difference,” led to some brilliant conversations in class about how we can all help the planet. The children then created colourful, informative posters to share the important message of the three R's – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
In maths, we’ve been interpreting pictograms and bar charts, learning how to collect and present data clearly. The children have been reading different graphs, comparing information, and even drawing their own charts – fantastic skills that help them understand and organise information in real life.
This term in music, we’re exploring traditional Indian music and instruments. The children will be listening carefully, identifying different sounds and rhythms, and learning about how music is used in other cultures.
We also had our first cricket session with Mr Smith which the children loved. The focus this week was on developing our overarm throw, aiming carefully at a target – which will soon become a wicket. It’s been great to see the children so active and engaged.
In DT this term, we’re going to be building detailed castles using recycled materials. The children are bursting with ideas and can’t wait to get going! So if your child is suddenly saving cereal boxes and cardboard tubes to bring into school, don’t worry – it’s all part of the plan! Our castles will include exciting features like towers, turrets, battlements, and drawbridges.
Have a lovely weekend, and thank you as always for your continued support.
