Year 3 Weekly Blog 2.5.25
Date: 1st May 2025 @ 10:12pm
What a fantastic week in Year 3! In English, we’ve begun exploring our new key text Roman Diary: The Journal of Iliona. The children have enjoyed stepping into the shoes of Iliona, a Greek girl living in Roman times, and imagining life in ancient Rome. We even dressed up as gladiators and emperors to help us prepare for writing our own diary entries based on a dramatic battle in the amphitheatre!
In Maths, we became Right Angle Hunters! After discovering that the corner of a ruler makes a special type of angle called a right angle, we used our very own ‘right-angle checkers’ to explore the classroom. The children were amazed to find just how many right angles were all around them. Why not try the challenge at home - can your child spot right angles around the house? Or even find an object with none?
In Spelling we’ve been learning about the prefix ‘im’, which, when added to words starting with ‘m’ or ‘p’, changes the word to its opposite - like immortal, impossible, and impolite. The children have enjoyed spotting these in their reading and using them in their writing.
In DT, our castle designs are well underway! The children have been busy designing their own castle structures, thinking carefully about the features and the materials they’ll need. We discussed how towers might be built from cylinders and curtain walls from strong rectangular cardboard. If you have any spare recycling materials for other children in year three to use (cardboard tubes, boxes, etc.), we’d be very grateful for donations. Thank you.
Next week, we’re excited to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a special mufti celebration of white, red and blue on Thursday 8th May. We look forward to visiting our very own St Luke’s VE Day museum, where children will explore real artifacts and learn all about this important historical event.
We hope you all have a wonderful bank holiday weekend! We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.
