Year 3 Weekly Blog 13.6.25

Date: 13th Jun 2025 @ 4:33pm

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 3. We began writing our own magical stories, taking inspiration from Wisp: A Story of Hope. The children have been using beautiful, descriptive language to bring the setting of a refugee camp to life.
We also had a special visit from our local police officers who led an important assembly on the theme 'Clever Never Goes'. This taught us all about stranger danger reminding us that staying safe is all about making smart choices, not just being brave. The children engaged really well and had some great questions to ask about how to keep themselves safe.
In maths, we have been learning all about perimeter – measuring the lengths of shapes by adding up the sides. We turned the classroom into a measurement zone and had great fun working out the perimeter of books, tables, whiteboards and more.
In guided reading, we have been exploring a fantastic poem called The Moon Speaks by children’s poet James Carter. This poem ties in perfectly with our recent science topic on light and dark. The children have been asking thoughtful questions such as “Why could the moon be lonely?”, “Why is the poem in the shape of a circle?” and, of course, “Is the moon really made of cheese?”
Science lessons have focused on the idea of reflection. We recapped our learning on light sources and explored how light reflects off surfaces. We investigated which objects are reflective and found out how mirrors really work.
In geography, we’ve been looking closely at the UK on a map. We located major cities and rivers, and practised using an 8-point compass to describe directions. The children really enjoyed using maps and atlases to explore more about where we live.
Next week, we are all very excited to celebrate Art Week. We have a packed timetable planned, including djembe drumming, choir performances, dancing, painting, sewing, and even creating mosaic portraits. We can’t wait to celebrate creativity in all its forms!
Have a wonderful weekend, everybody!

The Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
