Welcome back!
We hope you had a fun-filled yet relaxing half term. The children have come back to school full of energy and eagerness to learn.
To begin the week, we had a very special visitor. Rachel Brown-Finnis – the professional goalkeeper – came in to school to share her inspirational story with us. She told us all about how she started playing football and the challenges surrounding this because she was a girl. Despite this, she persevered and pushed to thrive in what she knew she wanted to do. With this attitude, she played for huge football clubs like Everton and Liverpool, and became a lioness! Rachel proved to the children that with resilience and commitment, you can achieve whatever you put your mind to. This was a super important lesson for the children and one that we hope they will carry with them. Rachel then went on the playground to chat to the children – lots got her autograph and were excited to see her.
In PE, we started our first lesson of hockey. We focused on correctly holding the hockey stick and how to twist it to ensure that the flat side is always being used. We also discussed how to stay safe in hockey, ensuring that the hockey stick is on the ground. The children will learn to progress and improve their skills in dribbling and control.
History has been exciting this week. We have started our new topic of the Stone Age. We have been introduced to new vocabulary like ‘prehistory’ and talked about how the Stone Age is the earliest part of human history. We also looked at a historic timeline, displaying the span of the Stone Age which was occurred over millions of years! It was so long, it was split into three – Palaeolithic, Mesolithic then Neolithic. Our History topic coincides with our new English text, Stone Age Boy. The children are writing a narrative as though they are the boy in the story who has appeared in the Stone Age! The children are using incredible language and have really creative ideas. We have looked at using complex sentences, noun phrases and direct speech.
We have also started our new topic of ‘Rocks’ in Science. We had a fun lesson with chocolate and looked at how some features of chocolate are comparable to features of rocks. For example, they layers in a Mars bar are similar to the layers of Metamorphic rock. The children then wrote some features of each type of rock in their book.
Next week
Next week is assessment week in Year 3. The children will complete assessments each morning from Monday to Friday. They will be for reading, spelling, SPaG and maths. The afternoons will continue as normal so please send your child in on Monday and Friday in their PE kit.
It is Odd Socks Day on Monday.
Home Learning
A new Home Learning Grid has been uploaded under the ‘Home Learning’ section of our Year 3 class page. Like last term, there are the daily non-negotiables tasks that are to be completed each night. These are critical in helping your child progress in all aspects of learning. Moreover, there are 4 tasks to be completed over the 7-week half term. The first activity is all about Remembrance Day so it would be a good idea to do this task this weekend! Please bring in/email us any homework completed via the Year 3 email – [email protected]
Have a wonderful weekend
