Another busy week!
In English, the children have been busy preparing to write their own narratives based off the book, ‘Stone Age Boy.’ They have chosen their characters names and have rehearsed their story. They are trying really hard to ensure they have some fantastic writing techniques in there, including repetition, alliteration and even onomatopoeia.
We have continued to develop our dribbling and shielding skills in hockey this week. We are gradually gaining more control over the ball and improving our pace. Yoga has also been brilliant. This is time for the children to focus on their breathing and learn different poses.
Our topic work has been all about mountains. Year 3 have learned that mountains are formed because of the movement of tectonic plates in the Earth’s crust. We learned that mountains are usually formed in ranges and that they grow close to tectonic plate boundaries. Moreover, we know that there are 3 different types – fold mountains, block mountains and volcanic mountains (they were very interested in the volcanic mountains!!)
In Maths, we have been focusing on multiplication and division. We have used counters to make arrays (for multiplication) and to split numbers into equal groups (for division). We are then going to focus on the 3 times tables. The 3 times tables are compulsory for children in Year 3 to know, however they are doing brilliantly at learning them already!
We took Year 3 to the cinema this week – what a treat! We watched ‘IF’ and ate our snacks which we thoroughly enjoyed.
TTRS Competitions
Mr Hardman, our Maths Lead, has set up weekly times tables competitions. Each week, classes in the juniors will play one another. This is a fantastic way to encourage your child to play TTRS and learn their times tables. TTRS is also part of our non-negotiables so please ensure your child is engaging with this as much as possible. We wish all the children luck and fingers crossed we win!!
Next week
We have DT week next week. The children are learning to sew to create a Christmas cushion. The children have practiced a cross stitch and will apply this learning next week.
Home Learning
This week, the maths Homework has been set on Doodle called ‘Solve word problems with multiplication (2’s, 5’s and 10’s)’. Even though in Year 3 the children must learn 3’s, 4’s and 8’s, it is important to retrieve and recall our prior learning and relate it to more complex problems.
