A busy week of planting bulbs, exploring germination, and diving into our new English text!

The children were absolutely delighted when a mysterious suitcase arrived in our classrooms at the end of last week, filled with a watering can, a gardening book and children’s clothes! We were all inspired to each plant our own bulb, and we can’t wait to watch them grow and flourish!

On Monday, Year 3 rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty as we immersed ourselves into our new English text: The Gardener by Sarah Stewart. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a young girl who goes to stay with her uncle in the big city, where, through her love of growing plants, she transforms a dreary city landscape into a vibrant, blooming paradise. The story is told through heartfelt letters written home, and this week, the children have all worked hard to craft their own letters written in the voice of the main character. Each letter captures themes of love, hard work and the joy of gardening, reflecting a fantastic grasp of the storyline!

We also continued our exploration of germination in science this week. Each child created a detailed concertina booklet that illustrates the six stages of germination, from the moment a seed is planted to the emergence of leaves. It was wonderful to see the children’s creativity shining through as they shared their booklets with one another.

In Maths, the children have been delving deep into their place value, looking at hundreds, tens and ones. We then looked at 100 more or less, 10 more or less and 1 more or less, using our Dienes and place value charts to see it visually. We also secured our knowledge of number lines and how to calculate what a blank number line counts up in! The Year 3 Team were all super impressed with the children’s efforts this week.

The children have also enthusiastically been busy practicing their hymns for our upcoming Harvest Church Service on Monday 6th October. To support your child in mastering the lyrics, we encourage you to play the following YouTube videos at home whenever you have some time. This will help reinforce what they’re learning in class, thank you for your continued support:

Home Learning

This week’s online home learning has been set on Doodle, entitled ‘Find 100 more or less than a given number’. Please ensure your child completes their Doodle assignment before the end of Wednesday next week.

Please also ensure you are completing the non-negotiables daily. A few gaps in reading and spelling have been noticed and this gap will close the more your child practices at home.

Permission for use of images

A new letter has been sent home to notify school whether you give permission for your child to be in photographs, for example on the school website, a video presentation etc … This is extremely important information. Please can you return the letters to school as soon as possible. We like to upload photos of the children working in class, completing activities etc however we must know who has permission and who does not.

Have a great weekend everybody!

The Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
