Year 3 Blog 17.4.26

Date: 17th Apr 2026 @ 2:32pm

Welcome back and hello Summer!

We hope you’ve had a lovely Easter and enjoyed lots of delicious chocolate. The children settled back into school brilliantly as though they’d never left.

Year 3 have a very exciting half term ahead, learning all about the Romans! The Romans is not only our topic unit, but also our focus in English. The children will be writing a diary linking to our text - ‘Roman Diary, The Journal of Iliona, A Young Slave’.

We have looked at the features of a diary so far and have learned all about the gladiators fighting in amphitheatres. To link with this, the children have started to learn the Roman language of Latin!

Fractions continue to be a focus in Maths. The children have learned about equivalent fractions this week and have learned how to use a fraction wall to find which fractions are equivalent. The children know that ½ is equivalent to 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10 and more. They also know that ¼ is equivalent to 2/8.

In PE, the children have started to develop their throwing and catching skills in cricket. They were shown how to hold a ball correctly for an overarm throw (2 fingers on top, thumb underneath) and also the long barrier which is essential for fielding. The children also had a go at throwing the ball at a target.

In RE, the children’s big question is about the importance of festivals to religious and non-religious communities. To begin this unit, the children looked at different celebrations and why they are important.

Swimming

As part of our PE lessons, the children must learn how to swim. 3C are having their 5 sessions first and therefore have received a letter about the children starting swimming next Friday 24th April. Please read the letter carefully and ensure your child has everything they need. There must be no jewellery and all children must wear a swimming hat. These are available at Formby Pool for you to purchase beforehand if needed.

Home Learning

The homework for this week has been set on Doodle, named ‘Count in, and work with, tenths’ to consolidate that the denominator is how many equal parts a whole is split into. Please ensure your child completes this by Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend all,

Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
