Another great week complete!

In Class Worship this week, we looked at having a ‘Habit of Silence’. We talked about what a habit is and how we think of habits to be ‘bad’ things like biting our nails. We flipped this and thought about how we could create a habit of taking some time out and being in silence. Our days are super busy so it is important to take a step back and take some time for yourself for a few minutes.

In English, we have been using our experience day in the forest to explore some adventurous language and vocabulary. With this experience, Year 3 have written 4 fantastic stanzas to their poem, ‘Autumn is Here’. They have included complex writing features including metaphors and personification. Some of the sentences the children have created are: ‘the cherry cola leaves pounce to the crimson carpet’ and ‘her earthy avalanche of wind drifts around the dense wood‘ – how amazing!!! The Year 3 team have been completely blown away by their ideas and imagination!

This week in Maths, we have been focusing on column addition and subtraction with exchanging. You may know this as ‘renaming’ or ‘carrying’. This is the mathematical vocabulary we are using in St Luke’s as the children do ‘exchange’ 1 ten for 10 ones, 1 hundred for 10 tens etc .. This method will be used throughout the juniors and as they continue into high school so we are focusing on consolidating this. The children have understood it brilliantly and really enjoy using it too.

PE was very exciting. To end our dodgeball unit, Year 3 had a dodgeball competition. There were 8 teams (4 teams from 3R, 4 teams from 3C) and they all played each other brilliantly, showcasing their dodgeball skills and sportsmanship. Once all teams had played, we had 2 teams in the semi-final, and another who had qualified for the final. The final game was spectacular – there was skilful dodging and some powerful throwing. The children played the game very honestly and we had so much fun.

We have also started our DT work in preparation for our apple crumble making next week. The children have looked at all the continents and climates across the world and discussed where some foods come from. If you have any questions about our DT week, please contact the Year 3 email. [email protected].

Home learning

This week, there will be no doodle homework. Because we have been focusing on using the column method with exchanging, we have sent home a sheet to be completed and returned for the following Wednesday.

Please ensure your child’s name is on the sheet!

Parents Evening

Thank you to those who attended our Parents Evening on Thursday 16th. It was lovely to speak to you properly about how wonderfully your child has settled in to Year 3.

For Wednesday 22nd Parents Evening, a link will be sent via School Spider on Tuesday.

Have a lovely weekend everybody.

Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
