Year 3 Blog 01.05.26

Date: 1st May 2026 @ 2:32pm

Another exciting week!

This week, the children were super excited about their trip to Wales on Thursday. Year 3 visited a Roman Fort and experienced life as a Roman. It started with a 1km walk to the fort in the sunshine - the children were mesmerised by the towers and weapons they could see as they arrived. The children then swore their commitment to the Roman legion and split off to learn more.

One half of the experience focused on being a Roman soldier. The children put on chain mail (rubber!) and got themselves a spear and a shield. They then marched in formation to the field where they practiced protective formations with the shield and how to throw a spear at a target. After that, they got split into three groups and worked together to make a road, just like the Romans did, using sand and rock.

The other half of the experience was learning about the Romans and what their life was like, including how many hours they trained and where they slept. They sat on bunk beds and realised how smelly and uncomfortable they were. The children got to see lots of artifacts, such as pots, an oven, and an oil pot as well as different types of swords and shields. The children were then shown a type of weapon the Romans used to use to launch things - the distance it launched something was the distance of 5 football fields!

The children had a fantastic day and have definitely been tired today. Their behaviour was impeccable and represented St Luke’s brilliantly.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
