Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope the early start on Monday wasn’t too difficult and the children are happy to be back in school. We have had such a wonderful week, it’s been lovely hearing all about their time off and what they got up to. A lot of chilling which to us sounds like the perfect way to spend a half term!

We kick started our terms making reading dens! This is always a day we all look forward to. The children had time to set up their dens, then they were able to kick of their shoes, get cosy and relax reading either on their own or sharing stories with their friends. Mrs Avis was also able to get a few pages in of her favourite book – a fabulous morning for everyone! We are really keen to promote and showcase our love of reading and Monday’s morning reading for pleasure was a perfect way to start our new term. This also led nicely into our English topic book ‘Little Red Reading Hood’. We discussed where we like to read most and thought about all the places Little Red might like to read when beginning our modelled write. The children also spent time in the areas writing their own book review.

In Maths we have continued looking at shape, focusing on 3D shape this week, reminding ourselves of their names and looking at their properties (their faces, vertices, edges, can they roll/stack) we then spent time sorting the shapes into different groups. For more information on Maths, please visit the home learning page as our weekly maths home learning reflects this.

Our magical topic this term is ‘Once Upon a Time’ so lots of traditional tales have been read this week. We have been creating our own versions using our puppets and puppet show, it’s been fantastic seeing the children’s imagination run wild.

In Music we spoke about how music can really impact storytelling and how the tempo/timbre/dynamics change to set the scene. We listened to a retelling of the Three Little Bears with the orchestra playing.

During RE we did a lot of thinking about God and how important he is to Muslims. We made references to a balloon and how important the air is to a balloon but we cannot see it. The children thought about where God is and made their own pictures, we had some lovely pictures, some rainbows, clouds, versions of heaven, people, love trees, hearts. It was really special seeing the children’s own interpretation.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 2 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
