Year 2 9.5.25

Date: 9th May 2025 @ 4:18pm

Another busy week in Year 2!

This week, the children have enjoyed discovering more about the Great Fire of London and significant people from that time period including King Charles II, Sir Christopher Wren and Samuel Pepys. The children clearly explained how Samuel Pepys is significant because his diary tells us information about the Great Fire of London and the Plague. Some children were inspired to write their own diaries! The children also thought it was funny that he buried his cheese and wine to keep it safe! As budding architects, we explored how London was rebuilt following the devastation from the fire and the children drew and planned out how they would improve London streets, buildings and houses for the future to make them safer. Lots of children thought that the streets should be wider, houses should be made out of bricks and definitely not wood and straw!

We also came to the end of our shared diary writing and the children are already planning and considering what they will write in their diaries when they pretend to be alive during the Great Fire of London next week.

VE Day brought lots of time for reflections on how life has changed over time! The children looked great in their red, white and blue and loved exploring the artefacts during their museum visit. We were all surprised with how heavy the helmets were! It was wondferful to hear children sharing stories about their relatives who were in the war and take a moment to appreciate people's sacrifices during this period of time. They were very surprised to learn that children as young as themselves were sent to other families in the countryside to keep them safe; unimaginable!

During RE, the children have continued discussing and sharing special books. We started discussing their own special books and focussed more on the Bible as a special, holy book this week. The children listened to the parable of the Lost Sheep and reflected on what the message was behind the story. Next week, we will be continuing to learn about special books and will develop our understanding of the Torah as a special book.  During music, the children continued to explore pitch and practised singing. Next week we will be exploring pitch when playing the glokenspeils.

The children enjoyed the sunshine on Tuesday  during Outdoor Games and are really putting lots of effort into our athletics skills. This week they practising jumping in a variety of ways. Lots of children shared how they like watching long jump.

During maths, we have continued to practise telling the time including o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. The children have worked hard on this, but telling the time does take lots of practice! We will revisit these times next  week and then move onto telling the time to five minutes. Please see this week's Home Learning blog for more information about maths this week and see the assignments set on Doodle.

We hope  you have a lovely weekend.

The Year 2 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
