Year 1 Blog 16.1.25

Date: 16th Jan 2026 @ 8:51pm

We’ve had a very busy and exciting week in Year 1!

Writing has really taken off and we are so proud of the children’s progress. We have been writing facts about different toys using full sentences. The children have been practising writing together as a whole class, thinking carefully about how to put our 'chotting' (thinking) words into sentences whilst trying our best to write clearly. We can’t wait to see how they get on when they start writing independently about a teddy bear over the next few weeks – we definitely have some budding little writers in our classrooms!

In Maths, we have been focusing on numbers to 20. The children have been using number tracks and number lines to help them recognise and order numbers, especially the teen numbers. We have been looking closely at how these numbers are written and understanding that the “1” in numbers like 14 or 17 represents one ten, while the second digit shows how many ones there are. The children have been working really hard and showing great understanding.

In Science, we have been learning about materials and asking the question: Which materials are waterproof? The children have been using and understanding the words absorbent and waterproof. Next week, they will be working in groups to investigate which materials can keep Teddy dry in a jar – a fun experiment which will be so exciting!

In Music, we have been exploring tempo, which means how fast or slow music is. The children have been listening carefully to different pieces of music and moving their bodies and using their voices to show when the music is fast or slow. They had great fun expressing themselves and showing the difference in speed.

Well done, Year 1, for another fantastic week of learning! 👏

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
