This week was Science Week! The children enjoyed lots of brilliant activities that encouraged their natural curiosity about the world. Our absolute highlight was a visit from Dr Hilton, who brought along Scully Bob to teach us fascinating facts about the bones in our bodies. We loved learning that even though we all look different on the outside, on the inside our skeletons are the same.

In English, we have been using words ending in –er and –est to describe things as we planned our exciting space adventure stories. The children have been using these comparing words to make their ideas even more imaginative.

In Maths, we have been learning about measuring, using vocabulary such as shorter/shortest, longer/longest and taller/tallest when comparing objects. We have also started exploring capacity and volume, investigating how much different containers can hold and using words such as full, empty and nearly full while pouring and comparing.

In History we learned about Anne Bonny, a brave pirate from Ireland who sailed the seas over 300 years ago, and Mae Jemison, who in 1992 became the first Black woman to travel into space. The children enjoyed discussing the similarities between exploring the ocean and exploring space!

In Geography, linked to our pirate topic, the children designed their own treasure maps. They practised using compass points North, South, East and West, and created routes using positional language.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who donated an Easter egg to the Southport Food Bank. The children looked fantastic in their mufti clothes, and we also explored the Easter story, discussing why Christians give eggs at Easter as a symbol of new life and hope.

Well done Year 1 for another fantastic week of learning!

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
