A Brilliant First Full Week in Year 1!

What a brilliant first full week we have had in Year 1! This week has been all about settling in, getting to know one another and exploring our new learning environments, both indoors and outdoors. The children have been busy discovering where everything lives, learning how to use and look after our resources and, most importantly, becoming absolute tidy-up superstars! 

We have been learning lots of new Year 1 routines and expectations and have been so proud of how quickly the children are settling into their new classrooms.

We have also been incredibly lucky to begin exploring our wonderful new Year 1 and Year 2 shared garden. The children have loved having the opportunity to learn, play, investigate and create together outdoors. We can't wait to see how they continue to use this exciting space throughout the year!

What are we learning? 

We can't wait to get started with our first topic, ‘My Home and Me’. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to celebrate everything that makes them and their families unique, while also learning more about Formby – the special local area that our school calls home.

English 
Our first focus text will be Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival. Through this lovely story, we will explore feelings and worries before working towards writing 3–5 simple sentences about Ruby’s worry. We will be practising using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops, as well as using our phonics knowledge to help us spell words independently.

Maths 
Our first Maths unit will focus on place value within 10. The children will continue to develop a secure understanding of numbers 0 - 10 by sorting, counting and representing objects in different ways. We will compare groups using language such as more, fewer and the same, and begin to develop a really strong understanding of the numbers to 10. Lots of our learning will be practical, using objects and equipment to help us explore and explain our mathematical thinking.

Science 
Our Science learning begins with Our Amazing Bodies and Super Senses! We will learn to name and identify different parts of the human body and explore our five senses – sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. There will be lots of opportunities to investigate and find out more about just how amazing our bodies are!

Geography 
In Geography, we will be exploring our local area of Formby. We will learn to identify human and physical features, look at our local area from a bird’s-eye view and begin to understand how maps represent real places. Later in the unit, we will create our own simple maps and plan a route from school to St Luke’s Church.

RE 
Our first RE enquiry is ‘Who is a Christian and what do they believe?’ We will explore what Christians believe about God, why Jesus is important to Christians and why Christians pray. The children will have lots of opportunities to share their own ideas, ask questions and listen respectfully to the thoughts and beliefs of others.

Art 
In Art, we will be developing our drawing and sketching skills. The children will experiment with different pencil strokes, lines, shapes and techniques and learn how these can be used to add detail and texture to their drawings.

PE 
This week, the children enjoyed their very first gymnastics lesson in the hall! We were so proud of how sensible they were as they learned to use the space safely and explored different ways of moving their amazing bodies. What a fantastic start!

Next week, we look forward to even more learning, exploring and playing alongside our friends, while developing lots of new skills, growing in independence and continuing to build our confidence as brilliant Year 1 learners!
