A shorter but equally fun-filled week of learning in Year 1!

In English, we have been working hard on writing simple sentences using capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops. Our instructional writing on how to catch a giant has been lots of fun, with the children using exciting descriptive words like biggest, gooiest, and juiciest to describe the delicious food inside their traps.

In Maths, we have been building on our understanding of halves and quarters. The children are beginning to explore how parts make a whole and are preparing to use this knowledge to support their understanding of multiplication.

In Art, we have continued developing our forest landscape pieces. The children have now created three pages full of colours and marks inspired by what you might find in a forest. This week, we began tearing shapes and using scissors, before carefully arranging our collage pieces as we get ready to glue them into our sketchbooks. We are excited to add even more detail using pen, everything is looking fantastic so far!

We have also been reminding ourselves about the importance of our class rules, making positive choices, and always trying our best. We would really value your support in reinforcing these messages at home as always. We are proud of how far the children have come and want them to continue to thrive as we head towards the last term of Year 1!

We have also been so impressed with all of the brilliant home learning we are seeing coming into school. If possible please could you glue/tape any loose worksheets into your child's blue home learning book. Thank you!

A note about the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in the week commencing Monday 8th June 2026:

It is important that children continue to practise their reading at home. Please support your child by focusing on recognising special friend sounds (including split digraphs like a-e, o-e, i,e, u-e) and blending these sounds accurately to read words. Below are some helpful videos to support reading both real and nonsense words, similar to those in the check. If you have any questions about the check, please speak to your child’s teacher.

The Year 1 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
