The pirates have well and truly taken over Year 1 this week! We started the week with huge excitement as we had not one, but two dress-up days to enjoy. Pirate Day on Tuesday was a real highlight. The children all looked fantastic in their costumes. In the afternoon they set off on an exciting treasure hunt with our very own pirate expert, Miss O’Neill, which everyone loved.

Thursday was another special day as we celebrated all things books for World Book Day. The children enjoyed a cosy story time with toast and juice, a fantastic whole-school assembly, and a brilliant “Guess the Character” quiz.

In English, our writing is really coming along. We have started planning our second adventure story, imagining travelling on a rocket! The children thought carefully about how a rocket might move and came up with some brilliant describing words such as soar, fly high and zoom.

In Maths, we have begun a new unit on measuring length. The children have been comparing objects and discussing which are longer, taller or shorter. At the moment we are measuring using everyday objects (for example, “the pencil is 4 cubes long” or “the toy car is 2 paper clips long”). This will lead us on to using standard measuring vocabulary and tools, helping the children build the skills they need to be confident mathematicians.

In RE, we are continuing our Easter unit, Celebrating New Life. The children have been fantastic Spring Detectives, looking for signs of new life and growth around our school. We talked about how springtime reminds us of new beginnings and linked this to the Easter story from the Bible, when Christians celebrate new life and hope.

We look forward to seeing those who can attend our parent teacher meetings beginning next week.

Homework

In your child’s book bag you will find our new term’s Home Learning Grid. This has also been uploaded to the Home Learning page (under the tab on our Year 1 class webpage) in case you need another copy.

We have also included a handwriting sheet for practising letter formation. Please complete this with your child and return it to school by Wednesday each week.

This term we are placing a big focus on handwriting, so we would really appreciate your support at home. Please encourage your child to form their letters correctly using the Read Write Inc. handwriting phrases, which we have also included in your child’s book bag to help guide you. Thank you for helping us support the children in developing neat, confident handwriting.

Lastly, we have also set a spelling assignment on Doodle for your child to complete, focusing on one sound - ea in the word tea. Please let your child's teacher know if you require any help at all with homework. Thank you for your support.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
