Year 1 Blog 06.02.26

We have had a wonderfully busy and productive week in Year 1, filled with lots of exciting learning across the curriculum.

In English, the children are well underway with writing their individual teddy bear fact files. They have really enjoyed getting to grips with independent writing, showing great focus and enthusiasm. We are incredibly proud of the effort they are putting into their work and the progress they are making.

In Science, the children consolidated their materials knowledge by identifying and sorting everyday objects into groups such as plastic, metal and fabric, working independently and in small groups.

In History, we began learning about Victorian Toys. Using a timeline, we explored where the Victorian period fits in comparison to the children’s own lives and today. The children looked carefully at pictures of Victorian toys and discussed how they may have been played with, what they were made from and how they compare to modern toys. We also talked about the differences between toys owned by rich and poor children in Victorian times, using examples to spot similarities and differences.

Our PSHE lesson focused on Citizenship – Belonging. We shared the story We All Belong by Alex Goss and discussed the different groups people can belong to. The children enjoyed talking about the groups they are part of, such as St Luke’s, Brownies, gymnastics, football and swimming. This was a lovely opportunity for them to share and celebrate their own experiences as part of a class community.

In Maths, we continued working on subtracting ones using number bonds. The children are becoming increasingly confident with this skill and are beginning to use number bonds more fluently to support their calculations.

We also enjoyed celebrating NSPCC Number Day on Friday. The children all looked brilliant dressed as numbers, and we had lots of fun celebrating numbers throughout the day while thinking about the brilliant work the NSPCC does for children.

Finally, we found some lost photos from our Teddy Bear Picnic in 1MP - enjoy!

The Year 1 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
