What a wonderful, sunny week we have had!

The children have been engrossed by our history topic and are loving learning about the Great Fire of London. We have been so impressed with how quickly the children are recalling facts, key events and people and how confidently they are articulating this knowledge in their explanations. This week, we focussed in on how the fire spread so quickly and learnt that there was not a fire service like we have today in 1666, instead leather buckets of water and water squirters were used to try and extinguish fires. We also discussed reliable sources of information and sorted sources into helpful and not helpful e.g. a modern £10 note would not tell us anything about The Great Fire of London, but an eyewitness account. During dance, we started to create a Great Fire of London dance with themed actions e.g. Samuel Pepys writing in his diary, people fleeing in their rowing boats and houses being blown up with gunpowder.

During English, the children have continued to write a diary in role of a rat hiding in the bakery and witnessing the events of the fire unfold. We are up to writing about gunpowder blowing some of the houses up after King Charles II ordered for houses to be demolished to control the spread of the fire. We were very impressed with the  children's vocabularly and look forward to seeing further events unfold next week.

On Tuesday, the children enjoyed the start of their Athletics unit during Outdoor Games. We practised our 'reactive running' and showing a good starting position ready for running (balls of our feet, arms ready for running). Some children were really speedy with their side stepping too!

We also enjoyed practising our singing and working on low and high pitches during music, learning the song 'Once a men fell in a well...'

During maths, we have focussed our attention on identifying, naming and describing properties of 3D shapes. The children are getting speedier identifying shapes and guessing shapes based on clues given e.g. 6 faces, 8 vertices, square faces, 12 edges. Can you guess the shape?... They also enjoyed building structures using 3D shapes and naming which shapes they used.

Take a look at the Home Learning blog for more information about this week's maths learning and linked maths task.

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend!
The Year 2 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
