Reception Weekly Blog
It’s really starting to feel like Christmas, there’s a buzz in the air at school and we are ready to embrace all the festivities!
On Monday, we began the week by talking about Advent, marking the start of a month of celebration and reflection as Christians around the world count down to the birth of Baby Jesus. The children loved discussing the Advent candles and were eager to share what they had discovered behind the doors of their own calendars at home. We also enjoyed a beautiful musical treat from our Year 3 friends, who sang us through the story of the First Christmas.
On Tuesday, our focus turned to celebrations, especially birthday traditions. We spoke about how many people believe Christmas Day is Jesus’ birthday and how special babies are, bringing signs of hope. The children prepared for a very special visitor and came up with thoughtful questions they wanted to ask a mum and her baby.
On Wednesday, we welcomed baby Sloane and her lovely mum to school. The children were full of curiosity, asking questions such as:
- How do we feed a baby?
- How does a baby sleep?
- What does a baby eat?
- How many teeth does she have?
They sat beautifully and quietly so they wouldn't scare the baby — who was also wonderfully behaved!
On Thursday, we had another special treat as our Year 2 friends performed their version of The Nativity. We were so impressed with their confident lines, joyful singing, and enthusiastic dancing. Our Reception children are becoming experts in retelling the Christmas story!
Finally, on Friday we rounded off the week with a lovely session with our Year 4 buddies, who had been designing, creating, and baking delicious cookies. Each Reception child was lucky enough to receive a beautifully decorated cookie from their buddy.
This week in maths, we loved getting to know number 6.
The children explored different ways to make 6 and practised showing it in a part–whole model. They enjoyed playing Snakes and Ladders, growing more confident when rolling the dice and moving their counters. Dominos also gave us some intense and focused moments as the children worked hard to match numerals and take turns fairly. We can’t wait to meet number 7 next week!
Next week, we will be taking a walk to church to learn more about Advent with Reverend Matt. Please ensure your child comes to school with a warm coat each day.
We absolutely love sharing your good news. Please email us at [email protected] with any updates, no matter how big or small – we always enjoy hearing from you.
Have a great weekend,
The Reception Team
