Reception Weekly Blog (9.1.26)

Date: 9th Jan 2026 @ 3:11pm

Welcome back! We have absolutely loved welcoming the children back for the start of the Spring Term. They returned full of excitement and enthusiasm, ready to learn and explore together.

What a chilly start to the week it has been! The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the ice in the ROLA, showing great curiosity as they observed, touched and talked about what they noticed.

We have taken things gently this week to help everyone settle back into school routines after a busy two-week break. The children have enjoyed calm choices such as puzzles, games and quiet play, which has been a lovely way to ease back into learning. They have also met their new reading and writing groups and have settled into these brilliantly.

In maths, we were introduced to number 8, and the children loved learning all about the ‘Octoblock’ and its special features. We have also had a strong focus on doubles during our maths discussions. The children now understand that a double means having two equal groups of the same amount — double means “twice as many” — and they have been keen to spot doubles in their play.

Our focus story this week has been Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This has supported discussions about making good choices and the promises we make as we begin a New Year.

We also introduced the children to Communicating Catherine, linking closely to our theme of being good communicators. We talked about how good communicators ask questions, share their ideas and show respect — rather than entering someone’s house without permission, eating their food, or breaking their belongings without saying sorry!

Next week, we can’t wait to explore ice in even more detail and continue building on the children’s curiosity and learning.

You may have noticed the ‘Focus Child’ letter in your child’s reading folder. We are really excited to begin exploring each child’s interests in much more depth. Please do email us if you would like any support with this — we’re happy to help.

Finally, we love sharing your child’s good news, no matter how big or small! Please continue to send these in using our email address [email protected]

Thank you for your continued support — we’re looking forward to another exciting week ahead!

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
