October already!

We can’t believe it has been over a month since the children started their St. Luke’s adventure! What fun we have had so far. There are so many new friendships being established, new experiences to enjoy and new stories being shared every day. We are so proud of how wonderfully the children have settled into life at St. Luke’s.

On Monday, we continued our learning about Harvest Festival as we prepared for our visit to church. The children brought in tins and packets to donate to those who are less fortunate. We thought carefully about where these foods come from before they arrive in our cupboards and talked about the important work farmers do to grow and produce the food we enjoy.

On Tuesday, we explored the wonderful story of Oliver’s Vegetables. This inspired us to look more closely at the vegetables that farmers harvest and how they eventually make their way into our shops and onto our plates. We explored a selection of vegetables using our senses, smelling, touching, looking closely and talking about their different colours, shapes and textures. The children were fascinated by our vegetable investigation and were very keen to get stuck in!

We also had our first visit to church to celebrate Year 3’s Harvest Service. The children were fantastic and joined in with the singing beautifully. While we were there, we also enjoyed spotting some of the signs of Autumn around us.

On Wednesday, we continued exploring Oliver’s Vegetables and spent lots of time discussing where different vegetables grow. We thought about whether they grow under the ground, above the ground or on top of the ground. We were blown away by the children’s knowledge and how confidently they could share what they already knew!

Later in the afternoon, we began preparing for our very own vegetable soup. The children learned how to safely chop the vegetables into smaller pieces ready for cooking. We talked about how the vegetables would change as they cooked and looked forward to tasting our soup the following day.

On Thursday morning, the children arrived at school to the gorgeous smell of our vegetable soup cooking away! We became detectives and tried to guess which vegetables we could smell. Was it broccoli? Beetroot? Carrot? There were lots of different suggestions!

Throughout the day, we watched as our vegetables softened and changed. In the afternoon, we blended them together to make a smooth soup before having the very important job of tasting it! The children were fantastic at trying something new and talking about what they could see, smell and taste. It was wonderful to see so many children feeling brave enough to have a taste of their very own vegetable soup.

On Friday, we rounded off another busy week by continuing to develop our Read Write Inc. phonics knowledge. The children have been working incredibly hard to learn their sounds and are becoming more confident each day. Please continue to practise the speed sounds at home as often as you can — little and often makes such a difference!

Next week, we are looking forward to exploring Autumn as the temperature starts to drop and we begin to notice more changes in the world around us.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! And don’t forget to share your good news with us by sending it into [email protected]. We love hearing about all the wonderful things the children have been getting up to at home!

Have a great weekend!

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
