Reception Weekly Blog (5.6.26)

Date: 5th Jun 2026 @ 2:28pm

Welcome back everyone!

What a lovely, short but sweet start to the final half term of Reception! The children have returned beautifully and were so excited to share their half-term news with us. From adventures abroad to local family fun, it was wonderful to hear all about their experiences. Most importantly, they have come back rested, recharged and ready for learning.

We began the week with a maths focus, developing our counting skills to 20. The children have been learning how to accurately count irregular arrangements by using strategies such as crossing out, moving objects and grouping. Our stopping number this week was 20, and the children loved using the Numberblocks to support their learning. It has been fantastic to see them taking their new counting skills into their independent play and provision activities.

The children have also moved into their new reading and writing groups. This term, our focus is on becoming speedy readers of CVC words, instantly recognising a growing bank of red (tricky) words, and developing strong writing skills as we approach the end of Reception. We are encouraging all children to form their letters correctly and ensure they are facing the right way. If you notice any letter reversals at home, please gently point them out and model the correct formation. Continuing to practise simple dictated sentences such as "a cat on a red mat" or "a dog in a sun hat" will really help to build confidence and fluency.

This week we also met two new experts! The children were delighted to return to a Numberblocks paradise and a Jurassic World-inspired classroom. We spent the week learning all about Harry's favourite dinosaurs, including what they ate and how they survived in prehistoric times. Harry truly is an expert in his field! Asser was equally proud to share his love of Scotland and numbers. He amazed us all with his impressive mathematical knowledge and proved himself to be a real "tiny teacher".

We can't wait to welcome the children back next week as we meet two more experts and eagerly await the arrival of our creepy-crawly caterpillars. We will be learning all about their fascinating life cycle as they transform into beautiful butterflies.

Have a wonderful weekend. Please don't forget to send in your good news, no matter how big or small, to [email protected]

If you are able to, a snack contribution for this term would be greatly appreciated.

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
