Reception Weekly Blog (27.6.25)

Date: 27th Jun 2025 @ 12:15pm

Happy Friday, everyone!

On Monday, we welcomed two new children to enjoy their special week as the "expert in their field." In Sand Dunes classroom, George taught us all about his love of football, he wowed us with his ball skills, shooting, kicking and dribbling to his nets. George also enjoyed learning more about his most recent holiday destination… Turkey! We hope you have the best time! In Pinewoods, the focus turned to Cali and Evie whose special interests were gymnastics and dancing. Evie and Cali also taught us about their important places, like Sydney and Belfast. The children have fully embraced the interests of their friends and they have inspired lots of children to take up new hobbies!

The children enjoyed practising their Sport’s Day races this week, they showed brilliant team work skills and kindness as they cheer on their peers, we are so excited! Don’t forget Sports Day is next Wednesday 2nd July. If you need any more information please don’t hesitate to get in touch [email protected]  Don’t forget your child is to wear a white t-shirt, with shorts/ leggings and a sensible pair of trainers for running.

The whole Reception Team are incredibly proud of the children, especially how they handled their first visit to Year 1 during our whole school Transition Day on Friday. The children were delighted to meet their new teachers and adults who will be working and learning alongside them. The children enjoyed The Rainbow Fish story and some activities that embedded the learning, as well as exploring the Continuous Provision areas where they will be choosing their independent learning in September.

We have had a very exciting week tracking the progress of our caterpillars and tadpoles. The caterpillars are coming along nicely, all has been rather silent in the net as we returned to 5 chrysalises in Pinewoods and 5 Chrysalises in Sand Dunes on Monday, the children are excited to check whether there has been any movement each day but so far, the soon-to-be butterflies are happy in their little chrysalis houses. The tadpoles are coming along swimmingly, we are eagerly awaiting the tadpoles to change to tadpoles with legs. Our Froglet is in a new pond, ready to start the lifecycle all over again. Our sunflowers are sprouting, we love checking their growth each day and look forward to bringing them home to plant in the garden at home.

As we approach the final weeks of term, we would love to have the last few Secret Storytellers come and pay us a visit. If you'd like to be a Secret Storyteller and come in to read to the class, please get in touch with us at [email protected]

The children have now been taught all of the Set 2 special friends in phonics. Please continue to support this learning at home. You can watch this short video that introduces the sound “air that’s not fair”.

Encouraging your child to spot the special friend in a word before sounding it out will really help build their confidence. We have also been talking a lot about ‘speedy reading’, we are really encouraging our children to ‘Fred in their head’ and say these words with increasing speed and accuracy. Take a look at the following clip, to show you how we teach speedy reading in school.

Thank you for all the wonderful entries we’ve seen so far in our Reading Scrapbook. It’s such a great way for children to share their favourite books and develop a love for reading. Please help your child complete one page – it could be a short review, a drawing, a picture of the cover, or even a photo of you reading together. Let your creativity shine and return it in the canvas bag so we can pass it on to the next child.

We love hearing about all the great things the children are doing outside of school. Please keep sending us your good news – big or small – so we can celebrate it together in class. Email us at [email protected]

See you next week!
The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
