Reception Weekly Blog

Welcome back everyone – we hope you all had a lovely half term! It certainly feels like we haven’t been away. The children returned refreshed, full of smiles and ready for all that the rest of the spring term has to offer.

On Monday, we introduced our new Experts of the Week. In Sand Dunes, we were transported back to Greece through Sammie’s exciting upcoming trip for her mummy’s birthday. The children were fascinated to hear all about where she will be travelling. Meanwhile, in Pinewoods, Rex took us “out of this world” as we began exploring his passion for space and all things science. We can’t wait to see where these interests take our learning!

On Tuesday, we began learning about Palm Sunday as part of our journey towards Easter. We talked about how Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week, celebrating Jesus riding a donkey into Jerusalem, welcomed by crowds waving palm branches. We discussed themes of celebration, welcoming a king, and the beginning of the Easter story. In EYFS, we brought this learning to life by making palm crosses, waving branches and engaging in role-play activities to help deepen our understanding.

Wednesday brought great excitement as we headed off on our very first school trip to Imagine That — and wow, what a day we had! The children were absolutely incredible from start to finish.

We began by making slime, using our “muscles” for some super slime spinning! Next, we visited the Science Lab where Scientist Matt amazed us with dry ice experiments. We learned a brand-new word — sublimate — describing how solids turn directly into a gas. Matt even made us all a beautiful bath bomb to take home.

After that, we explored the Science Floor, where water play, sand play, glow stick walls and bubbles were firm favourites. We then enjoyed lunch before painting our own fridge magnets. One of the highlights of the afternoon was making snow — so much fun! We finished our visit in the Role Play Village, where imaginations truly came to life. From vets and hair salons to pizza parlours, construction sites and fabulous dress-up shows, the creativity was endless. We are so proud of how the children represented our school — a huge well done to everyone for such a successful first trip. We hope they all slept very well that evening!

On Thursday, we reflected on our wonderful trip by writing about our favourite parts and drawing beautiful pictures to match. In Pinewoods, the children also began learning about the human body, exploring our important organs and discussing what they do.

On Friday, Sand Dunes focused on Sammie’s love of gymnastics and how she practises on her bar at home with her sisters. We also learned about the Olympic Games and how they originated in Greece — linking perfectly to Sammie’s summer holiday destination! In Pinewoods, we explored the Solar System, learning about the planets and their special features. The children asked some fantastic questions and showed great curiosity. Don’t forget to look outside soon after the sun sets tomorrow to see the planets align! We can’t believe our planning luck.

Looking ahead, we have explained to the children that from next week they will be using the main playground on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. After Easter, this will extend to the full week. The children are welcome to bring one small, pocket-sized toy into school — something they would not mind getting lost or damaged.

As always, please send in your photos — no matter how big or small — to [email protected] We love seeing what you’ve been up to! Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
